Docklands Traveller

by John Middleton 5th May 2018

On a hot sun-filled day, with moderate winds of 5-8 knots (gusting up to 10-12 knots) 22 young sailors took to Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre to compete in the coveted Topper South East Open Series round 4. With thirteen different club/centres being represented from the south east, an array of talented sailors was on display for all to see. [Read more]

Rooster South East Topper Traveller at Crawley Mariners Yacht Club

by Matt Stein, Race Officer

The CMYC Topper Open was as it should be, all about the wind. Unfortunately it was more about when it would eventually arrive!

Plenty of drizzle and rain stopped anyone getting too hot under the collar whilst 24 intrepid sailors from as far as Warsash SC waited patiently for the arrival of the key ingredient. The CMYC galley served lunch at a record breaking time of 11.30am and in a move born more out stubbornness than by real evidence, the fleet took to the water. A course was set and after a tense moment when it became a downwind start during sequence, boats got under way in such a disorderly fashion, that a recall was required. More discipline was exerted on the 2nd attempt and off they went.

The second race required a black flag assisted start and this time some boats managed even two laps. Also, a ray of sunshine was seen over Gatwick (honestly!) Just one though, so many missed it!

Top spots were dominated by squad members taking 1st,2nd & 3rd. However local hero Miles Vidler sailed home an excellent race finishing fourth, leaving many squad sailors in his wake. He won the price for first Club sailor as well as the Rooster price for first non-squad sailor.

The protected lake was ideal for some most welcome newbies on the regional circuit and we hope to see them again very soon, now they mastered the art of moving boat, sailor and all their kit to ‘foreign’ shores. A big thank you to all the volunteers who make these events successful and to Rooster for supporting the Topper South East Region.

Rooster South East Topper Traveller at Tamesis Club

by Carolyne Vines

Having experienced sunshine and strong winds the last couple of years, the Toppers this year were greeted by grey skies and an almost flat calm with the odd bit of interest being shown by the light south easterly.

The courses were short – a loop in front of the club. Most of the seventeen strong fleet completed the one round of the first race and only four completed the half lap of the second race. After the break for a very necessary hot lunch of spag bol, the competitors headed out on the river for the third race.

It was obvious as soon as they got on the water that a conventional race was unrealistic. So we opted for a fun race in which any means of propulsion could be used apart from swimming, paddling or pushing along the bank.

Visitors came from HOAC, Island Barn SC, CMYC, Felpham SC, Hampton Pier SC, Silver Wing SC, Chipstead SC, NSBC, Datchet Water SC, Maidenhead SC, which is fantastic.

Winner Leo Wilkinson graciously thanked the Race team – Carolyne Vines, Sue Harris, Richard Harris, Ian Ramage and Ken Duffell, together with the catering team – Lauren, Josefine and Grace.

My thanks to Graham Evans from the SE Topper Area for organising the event from the Topper side, and to Rooster for the great prizes for the first three boats, and the non squad and first Tamesis prize.

Traveller Series is too close to call

Things are really hotting up in the Rooster SE Traveller series, which is turning out to be the closest in years. After nine events, it’s even closer at the front now than before. With four discards, Curtis is still leading, but only one point clear of Coco now, and only five points separating the first four sailors.

The fifth and final discard kicks in at 11 events. As things stand, Coco’s next discard is a 4th, whereas Curtis’s is a 2nd, so it’s hard to really say who is actually leading!

Downs Traveller

Sunday 21st May saw Downs Sailing Club giving their usual warm welcome to the South East Toppers.  22 sailors took to the water with a good breeze at first, but becoming very light as the day progressed.  The tides made for some very interesting courses, and a few sailors learned quite a bit in the afternoon.  Congratulations to Scott Wilkinson, 1st, Curtis McKay, 2nd, and Coco Barrett, 3rd.

This event marks the half-way point in the 2017 traveller series. It is turning out to be a really excellent year, with only five points separating the four leading sailors.  Amazingly, we have six different victors from six events sailed!  Well done to our current leader, Curtis McKay!

Rooster SE Traveller at DSWC

Saturday 22nd April saw the Toppers return to Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre.  Here is our race report from Leo Wilkinson.

Twenty two Toppers took part in this city Traveller Series event, with nine local sailors from DWSC entering. We launched into 6-10 knots of breeze on Millwall Outer Dock, but it was very patchy and shifty with all the skyscrapers around. The first race started with a tight pin end bias with myself, Fin, Coco and Curtis breaking away from the pack. We tussled all race but eventually Fin got ahead, followed by me, Curtis, Aaron and Coco.

In between races there was a big left hand shift which made the started even tighter at the pin, resulting in a single recall. In that race we discovered that whilst going down wind, if you sailed as close as you dared to the dock wall, you accelerated, even though there were tall buildings above you. I won, followed tightly by Fin and Yana.

In race three the wind levelled our over the course and it was between Fin, Coco, Curtis and myself but Fin romped away, leaving Coco in second and Curtis in third positions.

Going into the final race, with Coco having an OCS in the second race and Curtis a couple of points behind, it was a race between Fin and I for the overall top position. Fin won the race with Curtis, me and Coco having a photo finish.

Congratulations to Fin on his win in challenging conditions. Thanks to the club volunteers, all the competitors and all the parents for braving the centre of London.
